Has this ever happened to you……you’ve got a million things on your mind, ranging from returning phone calls, the grocery list, what you’ll cook for dinner tonight and you MUST remember to stop at the local pet food store on your way home to pick up more catnip for your cat, otherwise you’ll be receiving the stink eye from Kitty when you return home. And then you run into a neighbor who is chatting on and on about the upcoming neighborhood picnic. You find yourself not paying attention, simply doing the occasional ‘uh-huh’ or nod.
With all the millions of things on our minds, our minds are going constantly – that’s often called ‘monkey-mind’ or ‘mind-chatter’. That ‘mind-chatter’ gets in the way of having truly relevant conversations with members of our own species – imagine how it can interfere when you’re chatting with different species!
When we Talk2theAnimals (or the plants, rocks, trees, grass, mythological animals, stream, etc) it is vital that we get rid of the ‘mind-chatter’ and come to the conversation with a clean slate. That means we remove any mental, physical, emotional or spiritual blocks that we may have which would interfere with being truly present to that other sentient being and hearing what they have to say.
Why is that important? Because when a person is focusing on their own thoughts, the focus of the conversation is redirected from that animal (or the plants, rocks, trees, grass, mythological animals, stream, etc) and placed on the person. Your conversation partner will be sure to notice; unfortunately, we humans are often the last to notice when we have consciously or unconsciously redirected the focal point.
We humans are so used to ‘monkey-mind’ or ‘mind-chatter’ that we’re often not even aware it is happening.
When I am communicating with another sentient being, I am actually doing two things at the same time: one part of me is having the conversation, another part of me is observing the conversation. I need to be aware if I am keeping a clean slate during the conversation or if I am consciously or unconsciously influencing the conversation by projecting my agenda or needs on the slate.
This takes practice, it takes time to truly be conscious of what you’re thinking when you are in the midst of conversation.
Here are some warning flags that indicate you’re not actively tuned in for the conversation:
- The to-do list is running through your head
- The animal’s story reminds you of an experience you had with your own animals
- You find yourself projecting how you want the story to end
- An animal is explaining a situation to you and you find yourself not listening because of your own fear of that situation
- You find yourself thinking things like “I MUST know what happens”
- You find yourself fixated on the outcome, feelings, people or other animals in the story
- You find yourself attached to ‘helping’ the animal
The term ‘warning flags’ is not used lightly here. If you notice any of these warning signals, it is essential that you stop and reground yourself. If you are unable to do this during the conversation, then it is key to stop the conversation and resume at another time when you are ready or able to be fully present to the conversation. Should you discover you are unable to eliminate these blocks by yourself, then by all means seek out a professional to help you remove any blocks you are experiencing.
When I first started practicing animal communication, my first thought was ‘Cool! I’m helping the animals!’. I then realized I was helping the animals and their humans. Finally I realized that yes, I’m helping the animals, their humans AND I’m learning more about myself and helping myself.
Animal communication helps all species that are involved in a particular conversation. If you find yourself experiencing any of the red flags or blocks, well, congratulations, you’re normal! On the other hand, do what you need to do to remove these, otherwise you are no good to the animal (or the plants, rocks, trees, grass, mythological animals, stream, etc), the animal’s human or yourself.
